Course on Immigration & Resettlement:

Immigration/Resettlement is the process by which people move from one country to another with the intention of settling there; it is often motivated by factors like seeking better economic opportunities and escaping conflict or persecution.

• We’ll review the numbers and origins of people resettled in Maine, along with demographic insights.

​

• To help attendees understand the challenges of resettlement, trauma, and transition, we may screen Rain in a Dry Land or God Grew Tired of Us.

​

• We’ll explore the various pathways people take to enter the U.S., both before and after migration, covering the resettlement process, citizenship steps, and the distinctions between acculturation and assimilation. We’ll also discuss the services essential for support.

​

• We’ll address the trauma that often accompanies resettlement, along with health and mental health concerns, both pre- and post-transition to the U.S.

Course on Privilege & White Supremacy:

Privilege refers to the unearned advantages or rights that individuals or groups enjoy based on certain characteristics, such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, sexuality, or ability. White supremacy is a belief system that holds that white people are superior to people of other racial backgrounds and, therefore, should dominate society.

• We provide an overview of the concepts of "white" and "privilege," as individuals with white privilege often do not recognize or identify themselves as privileged.

​

• We also examine the White Privilege Checklist and discuss the policies and practices in this country that were established within a framework of white supremacy culture, many of which continue to persist today.

​​
